When I got the message from Arthur from Taiwan, saying that he wanted to propose in a week’s time in Barcelona, I got very excited. They were coming all the way to Europe, and Barcelona was one of their two stops in Spain. I never went to Taiwan – although we almost went there during our South-East Asian three months trip last year – but I’ve heard a lot of good things about Taiwanese people. They all turned out to be true! The couple was truly amazing, so polite and cute. They met seven years ago, at school, playing in the same basketball team. And now Arthur decided to surprise his girlfriend with an unexpected proposal in Barcelona. She could’t believe it entire shoot!
Arthur’s dream was to propose in front of the Magic Fountain show in Barcelona. While the light show is spectacular itself, it’s not the best spot for the proposal, for a few reasons:
- It is going to be completely dark by the time the show begins, so the only light will be coming from the fountain. This means that the couple would be dark and of course we do not want that as capturing the proposal is all about showing the girl’s reaction! If I use flash, the couple would be visible, but the colours of the fountain wouldn’t be visible.
- There are always loads of people, so it’s very difficult to capture the moment of proposal in a beautiful way.
I suggested another solution. I would take photos of the proposal in front of another fountain close to the Magic Fountain, right before the sunset, and after the shoot Arthur and his fiancé would enjoy the Magic show. He was happy with the suggestion.
We agreed that I would wait for them next to the fountain, without her knowing what’s going on. Once he went down on his knee, I started shooting. It was a very emotional experience and I’m very happy for them.
